Simplicity

Simplicity

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
John 6:35

“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”
John 6:37
.
.
The weary, the bankrupt, and the humble. Those who hunger and thirst. Those who have come to the end of their own strength, and finally seek God in their despair. Jesus says, “Come to me.”

In my eagerness to dig deep into God’s word and to understand the hidden things, I sometimes forget to consider the simplicity of the gospel of Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God.

Sometimes our theology can get in the way of our view of God. Sometimes we just need to sit and admire, with clarity, our first love. Jesus.

“Come to me.” He says. He promises to give us rest; to fill our hunger and quench our thirst.

“Come to me.”, He invites. Come to Him and He will do the rest.

Come to Jesus in faith. Come to Him in faith that He has the power and authority to save those who come to Him. Have faith that He will fulfill His promises. We don’t need to understand it all.

Simply, “Come to me.” Salvation freely offered.

Condemnation or Salvation?

A choice between Condemnation or Salvation

Jesus, the Son of God, was sent to save us from condemnation, not to condemn us. If we believe in Jesus, we will not be condemned, but if one does not believe in Jesus he or she is already condemned because of their unbelief.
.
.
“For God did not send His S
on into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
John 3:17-18
.
.
Jesus is the light of the world, sent by God to illuminate truth, but people who prefer darkness choose to deny Him. These people who prefer darkness and deny Jesus do so because they are doing evil continuously, and they do not want the evil things they do to be seen in the light of truth.

Those who believe in Jesus come into the light because He is good and righteous and faithful to make us this way as well. These have nothing to hide in darkness, and the light reveals the good in them, which is Jesus Christ.
.
.

“And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

John 3:19-21

Discipleship – What It Means

“So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.”
Jesus – Luke 14:33
.
.
Forsake – apotassō – to set apart, separate to separate one’s self, to take leave of, bid farewell to, to renounce, forsake
Disciple – mathētēs – a follower and learner of Jesus Christ.
As this verse in Luke tells us, a disciple (one who follows Jesus) must forsake all that he has.

“What??”, you might say, “I thought that Jesus wants me to be happy. These things, these people, all this stuff; they bring me happiness, but now you’re telling me I have to give them up??”

No, these are not my words, but the words of Jesus, who died on the cross to offer you forgiveness of your sins. It’s Him who says that we who follow Him (disciples) must give up all that we have for Him…and not look back as if we lost something. What’s to gain? Eternal life. (There is so much more.)

We must first give up our pride, and walk in humility. How can we learn anything if we are unteachable? We must come to Him with childlike trust.

Next, we must give up those hobbies and activities that draw us away from the Lord. Those things we do which result in us turning away from time in prayer or in the Bible, or in fellowship with other disciples. This can be a hard step. We can ask Jesus to empower us, and show us which things in our life these are. Those who have ears to hear, and eyes to see, will hear and see.

Does forsaking all I have, mean that I must sell everything and give it to the poor? No, but we must be willing to do so if the Lord leads us in that direction.

Does this mean that I have to separate myself from my friends and family? No, but it is best to separate ourselves from anyone who’s relationship with us restrains, diverts, or negatively affects our walk with Jesus. A friend who causes us to sin, is not a friend worth keeping. God, will show us if there are people in our life like this. Disciples will ask the Lord about this, those who are not disciples will not.

Does that mean that I need to give up my job? Perhaps, if the Lord has need of us elsewhere, He will make it clear that the change is necessary.

Do I have to sell my house and move across the country? It’s a possibility, if the Lord calls us to do so, we must be willing.

How will He tell me that I need to give up these things? Those who are disciples will have eyes to see the direction and ears to hear the voice of our shepherd. Daily prayer and reading of scripture are helpful ways to seek God’s guidance. God will speak to us in other ways also, but prayer and reading our Bibles are two ways in which we can all actively seek the Lord’s guidance.

To give up everything for God. It’s not a minor thing. The world would tell us that the cost is too high. However, I have found that as we move forward in faith, and with willing hearts, we discover that which we gain far surpasses that which we give up.

Your Glorying Is Not Good

It’s in the times of triumph and spiritual growth, during our walk with Christ, when we are most vulnerable to pride and sin. Do not boast of yourself during these times. Stay humble.

Pride may allow the shadow of sin to darken the door of our hearts during these times. Remember that a little leaven leavens the whole lump. Be on guard, and take shelter in the Lord!

Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

Wisdom Isn’t Lead By Feelings

“Use your feelings Luke!” A popular line from a popular movie we all know.

This just goes to show us that what the world will tell us about wisdom is not…at all.

What the verses below tell us is to think, not feel. We have emotions, yes, but wisdom isn’t lead by feelings. The opposite is true.
.
.
Proverbs 29:11
A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back.

Proverbs 14:33
Wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding, But what is in the heart of fools is made known.

Proverbs 29:27
An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, And he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.

Complying With God’s Commands

In the military, the chain of command is critical to effectiveness. A superior gives orders to subordinates, and the subordinates execute the orders. Simple, functional, and effective…in theory.

In the life of a free individual, however, the lines seem to be blurred today in America. People seem to be greatly offended if a command is given by another.

Whether it be a police officer, a teacher, a parent or an employer. When given a command, people seem to arch their backs and stiffen their necks in resistance. They either fail to comply entirely, or they grudgingly comply. Often with disastrous results that are their own fault.

God’s instruction book, the Bible, is full of commands: commands to His people (Israelites), commands to individuals, commands to believers in Christ, commands to unbelievers.

Do you receive commands, or does your pride puff you up with self-righteous indignation. Do you believe that the Creator of all things has authority over you, or do you see the commands He makes to you in His book as a buffet from which you may pick and choose?

God’s commands are for the good of those who comply with them. But we can’t expect calm waters when disobey His commands.

Deuteronomy 11:13
‘And it shall be that if you earnestly obey My commandments which I command you today, to love the LORD your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul,

Deuteronomy 30:16
“in that I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the LORD your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess.”

Psalm 97:10
You who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.

Proverbs 10:8
The wise in heart will receive commands, But a prating fool will fall.

Ecclesiastes 8:5
He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful; And a wise man’s heart discerns both time and judgment,

Jeremiah 1:7
But the LORD said to me: “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ For you shall go to all to whom I send you, And whatever I command you, you shall speak.”

Jeremiah 1:17
“Therefore prepare yourself and arise, And speak to them all that I command you. Do not be dismayed before their faces, Lest I dismay you before them.”

Matthew 14:28
And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

Matthew 22:37-40
Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

John 10:18
“No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”

John 12:49-50
“For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.”

John 15:14
“You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.”

Revelation 3:10
“Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.”

Just a few verses here relating to the commands of God. There are many many more, but these struck me this morning. I hope they add value to your day.
